Chinese Dumpling House Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA Last Updated April 2024

This small corner mandu shop inside the Zion Market appears to be a one-lady-operation. It currently features possibly L.A.'s first stunt-dumpling (corn cheese dumplings, anyone?), but don't be fooled. Traditionalists rave about the standard entries including the kimchi wang mandu and what some call the best gogi wang mandu (meat bread dumpling) in Koreatown.

Korean-Chinese shrimp dumplings are hard to come by even in L.A.'s sprawling Koreatown, but Pao Jao's saewoo mandu is a winner, with nice chunks of shrimp and that standard green onion and glass noodle filling. While the existing market has a food court, the new Zion Market will not; Paris Baguette is the only outside vendor making the move. Instead, several of the buildings surrounding the marketplace will hold office space, retail, and other services as well as a large assortment of full-fledged restaurants.

The hui tou potsticker is unlike any other potsticker I've ever tasted, owing to a strong taste of white onion that sticks around throughout. The tightly folded, flattened box shape gives it optimal surface area for pan frying, which lends it a slightly crunchy exterior. A native of Beijing, and a proud Chinese-American, Chef Shirley Chung brings a playfulness and refinement of flavors to her culinary creations. Shirley immigrated to America at age 17 for college and worked in Silicon Valley before following her passion for food. She attended the California Culinary Academy San Francisco and was trained in classic French, Italian, Latin and Chinese cuisines working with Thomas Keller at Bouchon, Guy Savoy, Mario Batali at Carnevino, and Jose Andres at China Poblano.

Envisioned with Michael Soriano (Realm of the 52 Remedies, Queenstown) and James Denton Design, it will span a cocktail speakeasy and an international mix of food stalls. Zui Xiang Yuan occupies the now-closed Flavor Garden space and in a trend that’s becoming increasingly familiar, also serves some of the former tenant’s specialties including outstanding leek and scrambled egg pockets. Security footage obtained by KTLA shows a woman walking up to the home with a mask on and knocking on the door. When it’s confirmed that no one is in the house, multiple men arrive moments later and smash their way into the home. The thieves had gone through everything, throwing the victims’ belongings around the house.

Nikuman-Ya is running the gyoza racket in Gardena, and that should really say enough. Sure, the cheese-pork-bun sounds a little stunt-dumpling, but the original gyoza is gingery, juicy goodness that's just seared on the bottom and warrants a taste if you're in the area. Well, if you're the type of person who's into that type of thing (and don't worry, there's a ton of us), Los Angeles is your dumpling mecca. From Chinese guo tie, to Japanese gyoza, to Korean mandu, to Georgian khinkali, to Himalayan momo, to Russian pelmeni, to whoever's going to take credit for manti, seriously. It’s not the only casualty in recent years in Brighton Beach, spots like Cafe at Your Mother-in-Law, one of the only restaurants to serve Korean Uzbek cuisine in New York, closed its doors in 2020. Hwang tells Eater that Shoo Loong Kan’s parent company is also planning to open a high-end Japanese barbecue restaurant as well as a boba shop at the Zion Market site.

Chef Peter Lai’s Cantonese menu is one of LA’s most innovative and his line of dim sum includes tasty siu mai, traditional xiao long bao, and jumbo-sized har gow. SGV OG Clarissa Wei described Luscious Dumplings' rapid hand-made dumpling process in a feature on Eater, but don't mistake the speed with which they're made as impugning on their quality. The pan fried guo tie have a bronzed, crunchy bottom that's unlike any other you'll run into, with regions of Maillard-ized goodness running along the edges like glorious borders to flavor country. The soup is visible through the impossibly thin wrappers and each little delicate bite is famously consistent, whether you've had two pieces or 2,000 in your lifetime across multiple international locations.

The dumplings here are all top-tier, but the pork siu mai, xiao long bao, and pan-fried chicken bun are the best. Possibly the worst English translated name dish on this list, the Juicy Pork and Crab Bun at Long Xing Ji is actually a tangbao, the xiao long bao's basketball-playing cousin. With a thicker, almost leathery wrapper, you're supposed to sip the soup with a straw and dismantle the rest of the dumpling as you eat it. Pine and Crane owner Vivian Ku’s got Silver Lake and Downtown’s dumpling situation locked down.

Old Village is famous for their khinkali (pictured), but it's also one of the only places you can get pelmeni in Los Angeles. The boiled Russian dumpling resembles tortellini in size, and it's topped with sour cream, mustard or vinegar and it's traditionally eaten with vodka (I'm not taking the bait on that punchline). Though I never really understood kimchi dumplings, they have an ardent following. One of the standout qualities of Dumpling House's steamed kimchi dumplings is their beautiful circular construction that evenly distributes that extra al dente bite of the steamed wrapper. What started out as a weekend-only stand is now a 7-day-a-week operation (still cash only, amazingly), and for good reason.

At Ms Chi Cafe, Jimmy oversees the front of the house but is really a Jack-of-all-trades leading everything that goes on behind the scenes. A little bigger with a more substantive wrapper than the ones you'll find at Mante House, the Monta at Su Be'oreg can be ordered by the oven-ready tray, so you can get the party started when you're ready...

There are now seven locations dotted throughout the Southland in West LA, Playa Vista, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, Long Beach, and Woodland Hills. The soup dumplings are wonderfully juicy with excellent dough consistency, as are the pan-fried buns. Varenichnaya’s name translates to “dumpling house,” and, as such, was known for its Russian dumplings and pelmeni; it also served dishes Uzbek and Serbian dishes, and at least at one point, had a BYOB policy. Several years ago, the restaurant traded out its original location 3086 Brighton Second Street, for a larger space at 504 Brighton Beach Avenue. Ms Chi Cafe might be a casual Chinese American restaurant but the quality of the food is on par with any fine dining establishment.

In 2013, Shirley was a chef contestant on Bravo’s Top Chef Series Season 11 New Orleans where she finished in the Top 3 and was invited to compete again in 2016 on Top Chef Season 14 Charleston where she was awarded as the runner up. In a partnership with her husband Jimmy Lee, Chef Shirley showcases her Chinese heritage and personality in a modern fast casual service approach at Ms Chi Cafe. We’re lucky enough to live in a city that offers pan-fried, boiled, deep-fried, grilled and steamed dumplings from all over the world.

The bread is delicious and fluffy, "essentially becoming the backbone of the menu," Mangun stated. That same summer, the family-owned Varenichnaya made the New York Times in a report about where to eat in Brighton Beach. The area, often referred to as “Little Odessa,” is New York’s largest home for immigrants by way of the former Soviet Union, gaining mass in the 1990s. Back in 2022, the Guardian reported the neighborhood responded to Russia’s attack on Ukraine with flags of solidarity with Ukrainian neighbors, and some even removed Russia from their business name entirely. “The Lula kebab, a hearty piece of ground meat, had a delicious charcoal flavor, as if it had been hauled out of a stone fire pit. Served on a gleaming metal spit with a side of onions, this dish is a tummy-pleaser,” Bklyner reported in 2015.

The pan-fried pork buns made with kurobuta pork stand up to anything served in the San Gabriel Valley. Hui Tou Xiang’s eponymous dumplings are flat-sided potstickers with a perfect sear on both sides. Hui tou roughly translates to “double-take delicious” in Chinese, which is fitting for these irresistible pork-filled parcels.
